In May 2007, the Ministero per i Beni Culturali invited the Consortium, already in charged with undertaking the ‘Archeomar Project’, to commence a further series of activities, which was formalised through an additional amendment to the work. By January 2008 all of the newly assigned activities were concluded.

The new investigations involved: additional new surveys with the aim of building upon the record of known underwater archaeological sites; further research or direct work on sites known through the previously conducted research.

Specifically, the following research and activities were undertaken:

  • Taranto – Area of “Mar Grande” and “Mar Piccolo” – Survey of the seabed through the recording of anomalies and their subsequent verification through immersion, in accordance with the methodology defined by the ‘Archeomar Project’.
  • Margherita di Savoia – Verification of new discoveries and their eventual recording.
  • Gargano – Study and analysis of the development of the coastline and the seabed, with the aim of discovering structures related to the port, and their subsequent detailed recording.
  • S.Caterina di Nardò – Work for the protection of a Roman shipwreck.
  • Metaponto – Verification, through excavation, of the anomalies registered by the Sub- Bottom Profiler.
  • Crotone – Survey of a medieval shipwreck; verification of new discoveries and the eventual recording of these new sites.
  • Capri – Photogrammetry and detailed multi-beam survey of two Roman shipwrecks of the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
  • Baccoli – Topographic survey of the Roman breakwater.
